A Sacred Space

by Kelly Heferle, Be Healthy Institute Staff Member

So the world is different today then is was just a few months ago.  I just remember watching the news around the world.  What is this Covid-19?  It won’t really affect us, will it?  Watching the videos and news coverage from other parts of the world…Italy…I just remember seeing terrifying footage of Italy.  Why is this happening?  These people have experienced such pain and hardship.  And then…we realize it is here…  Here in our country. Here in our state.  And finally, here in our community.

Now its real.  What can I do?  (Our country) We have shut down.  How do we protect ourselves?  What will keep us safe, strong, and secure?  This is where many ideas and strategies started to come in place to help protect and preserve my family’s health and well-being.  This is how I started to create my sacred space.

Everyone needs a place to feel safe, secure and supported.  This means many different things for many different people, but I feel it is important to share what became essential for me and my family’s well-being.   Where you spend your time…whether pertaining to the thoughts swirling in your head or in your actual physical space…this is crucial.

Now…having two teenage kids and a husband working in the healthcare industry, having our own space was important.  I moved out of my room with my husband, feeling it was best to help protect the kids and I as much as possible from what my husband could potentially bring home with him.  What do I bring with me?  What do I desire? I needed quiet, calm, and comfortable …yes!  But I also needed my essentials.  What are they?  Well, a variety of must haves….I will say.  My learning and experiences through the Be Healthy Institute has established me with many tools!  This is what kept me together for several months and what I will continue to practice to preserve balance and feel support.  May you find comfort in some or all of these treasures

Homeopathic Remedies – Dr. Arup Bhattacharya has a recommendation for some homeopathic essentials while we experience this pandemic, however some of my personal favorites have been gelsemium, bryonia and ignatia.

Rescue Remedy – a classic combination of Bach Flower Remedies to help you keep your calm.  My kids like to take these as well!

Energetic Clearing – Focus on engaging all the senses…scent is another outlet for a sensory soothe.   The burning of sage and frankincense not only smell so delightful, but they can help cleanse the area of a space. I love the way the home feels after burning sage.   Additionally, the practice of burning sage can kill germs…what better way to help keep us healthy!  And happy!

Essential Oils – My scared space would not be complete without oils!  Lavender, Lemon and Thieves are favorites. I use oils for many of my cleaning products, but these oils can be used in many different ways!

My Kuan Yin Cards – a message of inspiration and spirit are so important.  I also enjoy using Tarot and if this is what keeps you reflective, then by all means, make it part of your practice. I find the Kuan Yin cards particularly helpful when my perception might be clouded or I am feeling stress.  Inspirational cards can help give you words of wisdom, encouragement and focus.  I enjoy pulling cards on a daily bases when I feel I need this extra support.

My favorite books – Let’s Pretend it Never Happened – HA! Yes, this really is a book. But seriously, read something that will put you in a good headspace. I love to read at night. Go back to some of your all-time favorites.

My crystals – I’ve always been attracted to crystals.  You don’t necessarily need to know why, but learning about crystals, I find it fascinating to see that some of my favorite stones represent some very important focuses near and dear to me.  I made sure that I had my selenite, black obsidian and rose quartz included in my sacred space.  Wear them as jewelry, carry them in your pocket, meditate with them or simply have them at your nightstand…not only are they beautiful, they can literally “be your rock!” 😊

Feng Shui and My Sacred room – having taken over the spare room temporarily.  My basic knowledge of Feng Shui has allowed me to understand some of the essential components for a good place to sleep.  This room, being the multi-purpose room needed to be cleared of unnecessary clutter.  I added a supportive headboard to my spare little bed (something I had meant to do for years, but never found it a priority).  I also added a WuLu Gourd next to my bed for good health luck.  I was fortunate enough to have our lovely friend and  Feng Shui practitioner, Linda Ellson visit my home just months prior to  all of this Covid talk.  Knowing that I was residing in the “Partnership Sector” of my home, I also added some supportive elements to the room (i.e. a pair of rose quartz).  To learn more about the fundamentals of Feng Shui, look for our classes offered by Linda Ellson.  I have greatly appreciated understanding the basic concepts of Feng Shui and how to implement good practices in the home for better Chi.

My space – not even physical, but mental.  Take time to process, time to reflect.  Change is happening all around us and we need to be careful we do not allow ourselves to be stretched too thin. For me, I try to allocate time for meditation and yoga and most importantly, time in nature.
